Tunnel Camping Tent Description and How to Use

June 21, 2017

The most striking feature of a tunnel tent is lightweight tent but with much inside sleeping area compared with other types of camping tent, like dome tents and other half dome ones with crisscross poles design, this kind of pole design is designed to better shedding heavy snow or rain but it’s an overkill for a 3 seasons tent. The poles and extra rain fly and inner fabric add more weight to the total package and make it bulkier. And the tunnel tent is therefore designed to help cut backpack weight but still remain the valuable inside sleeping area of the tent. This kind of tunnel tent is very popular for hiking and backpacking as it can easily keep up to be ultralight and compact in your backpack. Trekking and mountaineering is also recommended to go with this kind of tunnel camping tent, lightweight and roomy sleeping area, climbers would like to cut weight of tent and spare more space and weight to pack food and water or other resources and equipment in their backpack to the summit. Although tunnel tent are single pitch and do not free standing, they can be windproof and excellent in shedding heavy snow and rain with its guy ropes and tent stakes to make it keep up to alpine locations and harsh conditions.

So, let’s take a look at our geertop 2 man 3+ seasons tunnel tent. This lightweight tent weighs  1.7 kg / 3.8 lbs when everything is packed in its waterproof stuff sack which includes 1 rainfly, 1 inner tent, 2 aluminum poles, 12 aluminum V pegs, 2 reflective guy rope with aluminum adjustor, 1 instruction. Tent floor use 240T PU5000MM waterproof coating polyester to keep the tent inside dry. All seams on the rainfly and tent floor are double stitched and taped well to make it 100% waterproof together with water resistant zipper for the large vestibule area. Two large ventilation windows and all mesh wall of the inner tent make this tent breathable inside. Floor Size: (80+210) * 140 cm  /  (31.5 + 2.6) * 55.1’’, Packed size: 45 * 15 cm (L * D) / 17.7 * 5.9’’ (L * D), Vestibule area covers 16 sq ft (1.1 cm2) for 2 person 3+ seasons shoulder seasons camping, hiking ,backpacking, trekking and mountaineering.

Here’s how to set up this tent. Firstly, remove the rainfly, poles, inner tent, tent pegs and guy ropes from its stuff sack. Remember to find a place clean and plain to set up your tent. This tent is single pitch, rain fly set up first, then hang the inner tent to its inside. So, the second step is to connect the poles, lead them through the pole sleeves on the rain fly and stick their two ends into the bronze ring and the edges of rain fly to make the poles installed there. Thirdly, nail the tent pegs and tie the guy ropes to the strap at the loner pole area, and fix the tunnel tent to the ground with tent pegs nailed to the nylon cords  and the edges of the rain fly, extend the rain fly to its largest mode. The two tent pegs that ties o the guy ropes and tent pole should be nailed parallel to the tent poles to make the rain fly taut and for more convenient exit. And connect the inner tent to the rain fly with the plastic toggles there to finish the pitching, key is to do it from the inside to the outside and toggles connect to its right rings.  Tunnel tent link.
