How to Deal with Hypoxia of the Plateau Area

July 10, 2017

Due to the high altitude of the plateau area, the air is thin, people is easier to have hypoxia on high altitude area than most of the low-altitude areas and the tourists need to adjust their own body limits the moment as the move from low altitude area to high altitude plateau area, hypoxia will cause a series of discomfort even disease.

Hypoxia is mainly manifested as headache, dizziness, palpitation, shortness of breath, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, bloating, chest tightness, chest pain, fatigue, weak facial swelling, dry lips, epistaxis and so on. Critical situations will arise phenomenons as rising blood pressure and heart rate, or even coma. Some people may come up with abnormal excitement, such as tincture state, more words and just speak randomly, gait instability, hallucinations, insomnia and so on. Severe cases can lead to convulsions, coma and pulmonary edema, and lack of timely treatment can be life-threatening.

People should pay attention to six aspects as they move from low altitude area to high altitude plateau:

1, Do a good job of your thoughts, deal with the plateau hypoxia problem correctly. Keep your mind peaceful and comfortable, relax, do not be nervous. Because the tension and fear will accelerate the heart rate, increase the symptoms of hypoxia.

2, Whether visitors go by plane or by train from low altitude to high altitude, (it's better to go by train or bus, autos as they offer you the time to adjust your body to high altitude weather that comes with thin air and low Oxygen conditions) do not take part in dynamic activities immediately. You should firstly take a break upon arrival, the best posture is to keep sitting or semi-recumbent in order to keep your  head low and it's good to conducive to smooth breathing and reduce hypoxia caused by brain edema. Usually the body can gradually adapt to the hypoxic environment after rest for a few hours or one to two days,  the plateau area is still suitable for human survival and living. And mountaineering of high altitude upon 5,000 yards to 8,000 should get some training in the high altitude plateau area to make their body condition ready for high altitude mountaineering and summit challenging.

3, In order to maintain a smooth breath, it's appropriate to do deep breathing. Because deep respiration can enhance the absorption of oxygen on the alveoli, and it's also one of the main physiological response to adapt to the plateau hypoxia.

4, People should pay attention to their diet, not to eat too much, choose some food that is easy to digest and absorb, like the high carbohydrate and complex with vitamin diet. Because eating food that is too  saturated is not easy to digest, which can lead to increased blood circulation in the gastrointestinal tract, increase the burden on the heart, therefore increase hypoxia. People should eat more food like vegetables, fruits and other digestible food. In particular, you guys should bring some chocolate or sugar and other spare, sugar snags, they are easy for digestion and absorption, the metabolism of them consumes less oxygen in the body, add energy to alleviate hypoxia timely and effectively. In addition, drinking appropriate amount of water, too much of water inside your body will increase the burden on the heart, thus increasing hypoxia symptoms.

5, According to individual circumstances, take appropriate choice to alleviate the plateau hypoxia. Such as suffer severe headache that can not be relieved in the past related experience, then you should take pain relief medication; if suffering chest tightness, chest pain can not be relieved to take quick rescue heart and other blood vessels to expand drugs.

6, If hypoxia symptoms continue or deteriorate after treated with rest, drug and food, they should be under the guidance of a doctor in time and exposed to more oxygen therapy. Conditions permit, the patient should be taken to a few hundred meters lower altitude.

Hypoxia can do such great harm to the human body, so how can we effectively deal with hypoxic disease?

There are many ways to treat hypoxic diseases, but the more widely accepted efficacy which is also the most reliable, less negative effects is of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is to send the people need this treatment  into a closed high-pressure chamber, suction of pure oxygen is a special treatment. The so-called high pressure refers to the air pressure in the cabin that is higher than 1 air atmosphere.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is an extremely safe clinical treatment. It has a small side effects, significant efficacy. As long as the patient before the hyperbaric oxygen therapy, listen carefully to medical staff in the treatment before the start of the mission, to eliminate ideological concerns, relax, and actively cooperate with the staff there can get a good treatment and efficacy. The most common discomfort encountered in hyperbaric oxygen therapy is the pressure of the binaural tympanic membrane in the ascending process due to the increased pressure in the cabin. This feeling is like people take the plane, feeling of their ears when the plane takes off and landing, this phenomenon will not cause serious damage.
